... some of it perversely "intelligent" in the same manner as humans.

I'm also confident they are not flying around in faster-than-light starships.

A story about people traveling among the stars in spaceships, as in Star Trek or Star Wars, is the same sort of fantasy as someone who visits fairyland riding a rainbow unicorn. That's not to disparage such stories. I'm a huge fan of both science fiction and fantasy and have literally thousands of such novels and short story collections in my home library, all of which I've read, some of them multiple times.

Space aliens may or may not be observing us. Until they formally introduce themselves we humans exist in a state of ignorance. In my imagination "First Contact" isn't a flying saucer landing on the lawn in Washington DC, as in The Day the Earth Stood Still, rather it's a subtle voice in the wind.
