25. During the Trump years

we often saw the regime's plans frustrated by the Constitution or the courts. The Republicans have been working on a new Constitutional Convention for decades and obviously they have been trying harder and harder to tilt courts at all levels their way. Another Trump term and a couple of states even temporarily taken by Republicans and all bets could be off.

As to the strength of the judicial system, it can be judged by those at the top, who have likely lived lives of social and economic privilege and much of whose self-image is vested in the system; or it can be judged by those at bottom of society when 95% of those incarcerated never received a trial.
