In reply to the discussion: If Dump suddenly dropped dead, who would the repug's presidential candidate be? [View all]All Mixed Up
(597 posts)63. They did. Not anymore, tho. They're now campaign infomercials.
It wasn't that long ago, tho, that vice presidents were chosen at the convention, which at least gave it some purpose. I think 1980's Republican Convention was the last time a VP was selected at the convention. There, Reagan announced to the floor he was picking Bush.
After that, the VP has mostly been selected in the weeks leading up to the convention.

OP
That's what I figured, but with no one else running, I wonder what the rules would be.

There are still Republican Primary Elections through June. Haley and DeSantis may jump back in.

Can someone actually jump in like that if they didn't even run in the primaries?

Yes. There's no "law" about who can run. There are party rules, but they can be ignored.

Sure, if they can get someone to place their name in nomination at the convention.

IDK, but he is already campaigning on the same ridiculous shit as Trump. The MAGA will love him.

Can we appreciate that part about him dropping dead for a few moments first?

I remember that. Even as young as I was in 1972, I did not like that decision.
