Little-known fact: Both France and the US were propping up a government serving a Catholic minority that was exploiting and terrorising the Buddhist majority--and had been ever since the French took over Indochina. The Buddhist monk who set himself on fire did so in protest of the ill treatment that Buddhists received under the South Vietnamese regime. Like, oh, the murder of 9 unarmed Buddhists in Huế Phật Đản, to name but one.

We failed in Vietnam because our military stupidly thought they could win a war in a foreign country against a majority of its population. So we did indeed lose a war of numbers there, because Ho Chi Minh had most of the Buddhist majority on his side.
