(113,824 posts)It is not a given that progressive disorientation, conspiracy theories, and media-driven/influenced paranoia could not have preceded a full mental breakdown. It is not a "given" he was chronically mentally ill. We may find out eventually. Regardless, even those with diagnosed (and medically treated) severe mental illness--including schizophrenia--can be pushed over the edge by paranoia-inciting exposures. In some cases, a "chicken v egg"--which came first phenomenon.
If you think that mental breakdown and even progressive mental illness cannot be induced--including by drug use/abuse, intense sleep deprivation and other phenomenon, read about the LSD experiments the CIA did on otherwise "bright and mentally healthy" employees in the 50s-60s. Here's a start:

No, I am certainly not suggesting this man was a victim of the above, only that we may find that he had not had a history of diagnosed or even suspected mental illness--only progressive obsessive beliefs in his conspiracy theories--which may or may not have likewise reflected some mental disorder.
