Having backyard chickens is easy, once you decide to do it. It doesn't get much more humane than letting them peck around in their space (in our case, a fenced side yard), putting out chicken kibble, and giving them a lot of your leftovers.
The more we promote that idea, the fewer chicken factories there will be. Working for tough regulations on said factories would help too.
But PETA? I think they live to gross people out, not come up with creative solutions for the problems they pose. Honestly, that ad is disgusting. But who in hell is going to give up scrambled eggs for breakfast because of it? I have no respect for them or their tactics.
In Hawai'ian the word for egg is hua moa: the fruit of the chicken. Just as it doesn't hurt an orange tree to pluck fruit from it, it doesn't hurt a naturally kept chicken to take its highly nutritious and delicious egg away every day.
