(1,527 posts)Victoria Spartz (born Viktoria Kul'heyko) was born in Nosivka, in what is Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine. There is a significant minority of Russians and Belarusians there in the northern districts. There are many Ukrainians, particularly the older ones, who were under communism/socialism, but yet when the Soviet Union collapsed, it ended up being very difficult post-independence to find work because during Soviet times, there were a lot of them. Ukrainian culture was suppressed for a long time and it's only recently within the last decade or so that Ukraine really asserted itself as being independent of Russia. But again, Ukraine has been divided linguistically between Ukrainian and Russian for a long time, particularly in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, even despite the fact that most of the people of eastern Ukraine voted for Ukraine to be independent. Even now, politically, there are big divisions within Ukraine, although it doesn't seem like it right now. But again, since she is in Indiana, it isn't surprising that she would follow the GOP playbook.
