(17,551 posts)The students are protesting U.S. policy. I think. That is unclear to me. Are the students protesting the U.S. policy of sending weapons to Israel, which has been a policy in place for a long time, because Israel has been our most reliable ally in that part of the Middle East? If the students are protesting the ongoing attack on Gaza, the U.S. isn't doing that and is trying to convince Israel to stop. I don't like the way the protests on campus seem so coordinated, and I can't help wondering who or what is behind the rapid spread of this particular protest. Lawrence O'Donnell said said there there are protests at 48 U.S. colleges and universities out of more than 6000. Maybe this seems worse because Columbia is close to so many news headquarters and they can send reporters out to cover the action and then go get lunch.
I don't have a problem with college students protesting American policies. I have an intense problem with Americans trying to overthrow their government violently and with ignorance aforethought. I want to remember there is a difference in motivation and hope that the students will come to realize that the U.S. government isn't sending troops to Gaza and the U.S. government isn't the Israeli government. Maybe the student protest would be more effective if they protested at the Israeli embassies in the larger American cities.
