The nine-member United States Postal Service Board of Governors has the sole authority to fire, and hire, the Postmaster General.

No more than five governors at any one time may be from the same political party. The governors select and have the authority to remove the Postmaster General.

The Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service sets policy, procedure, and postal rates for services rendered. It has a similar role to a corporate board of directors. Of the eleven members of the Board, nine are appointed by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate (see 39 U.S.C.
