My family wasn't evangelical but the great majority of the people around us were. Extremely conservative Southern Baptists, Church of Christ members, and Pentecostals. Generally they didn't consider Catholics to be Christians. They hated Russia, but it seemed to me that the biggest problem they had was the communist economic system. I rarely heard them say anything about the lack of freedom of religion, and the general opinion seemed to be that a Strong Leader was better than a democracy where the poor people would vote to bankrupt the government by voting for politicians who would give them unlimited benefits.

They seemed not to like Hitler, of course many of their parents had fought in the war, but they certainly admired his power.

I'm sure that evangelicals in different areas of the country were different. From what I saw back then I'm not surprised in the least about what I'm seeing now from the Republicans, only that the corporate 20% of the Republican party was able to keep the authoritarian 80% in line for so long.
