(2,332 posts)How can any of this be surprising in the least to anyone at all aware of reality? Do you think these bigots somehow poofed into existence from an alternate universe in 2016?
The stupid and hateful people of today are the same people who were calling Obama a monkey and Michelle a man in drag.
They're the direct descendants of the people who refused to serve my Mum and her co-workers at a restaurant in 1961 Michigan because their party was interracial.
They're the direct descendants of the people who were screaming at that lovely young woman daring to get a decent education in Little Rock, 1957.
They're the direct descendants of people who arrested Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin before her, and Irene Morgan even before them, for refusing to yield a bus seat to a white person.
They're the direct descendants of people who marched wearing KKK robes in states North and South during the 1920s.
They're the people who enslaved people in the South, and profited from slavery in the North in millions of ways.
How can anyone think this is, or even could be, something new or different, when it's what America has been about for all of its history? Good grief, it's almost criminal to be so very blind to how commonplace bigots and bigotry have always been in the US.
