Where he could walk down the street without some thug attacking him. I don't think we live in that world, anymore, and haven't for quite a long time now. Seems like most celebrities and even government officials are having to hide behind ever-deeper layers of bodyguards and other security measures.
A while back I read something in a Dorothy Sayers & Jill Walsh book that played back to me on hearing about Mr Buscemi's attack:
Once you have secured to yourself the sort of government that nobody dares to criticise, the way is open for the bulletproof car, the bodyguard armed to the teeth, and the iron hell of a discipline tightened to hysteria.

Or maybe America has always been a violent nation, led by a violent government, and thus it's no surprise when so many of its citizens are violent.

I don't get this, why would a stranger walk up to anyone and just randomly punch them?
