13. Alito says Justice Kagan is misreading a precedent that Justice Kagan wrote.

Cooper v. Harris is a redistricting case out of North Carolina that the Supreme Court decided in 2017, similar to this case, and the Court struck down the map.

Justice Kagan wrote the majority in that case, and Alito says that her dissent in this South Carolina case based on an "imaginary version" of that 2017 opinion... again, an "imaginary version" of an opinion that Justice Kagan herself wrote.

Alito effectively guts the Cooper v Harris precedent, and then claims the author of that precedent, Justice Kagan, is misreading Cooper v Harris.
