...be re-elected to another term, it is likely that nascent secessionist movements already underway in a few states will spread to many others. At that point, it is anyone's guess what the outcome would be. These secessionist tendencies can already be seen in at least two small but significant ways: cannabis legalization (states ignoring Federal drug laws and scheduling), and the state-by-state patchwork of legal abortion in the aftermath of the Supreme Court Dobbs decision.

Any major traumatic national event in the next few years might result in serious conflict: another ill-handled epidemic or pandemic (say, bird flu spreading to humans), a Trump re-election (particularly if there is evidence of force or fraud), another 9/11-scale terrorist attack, etc. The conflict would likely present itself a lot more like the Troubles in Northern Ireland than it would a formal civil war.
