(41,691 posts)50. Chuck Schumer never wanted Al Franken in the Senate to begin with
If you've read Al Franken's book "Giant of the Senate" which was written before he resigned, he mentions several instances where Schumer discouraged him from running for the Senate. When Franken had to go through a lengthy recount process in Minnesota there was -zero- support coming from the Senate Democrats, and at the time they were led by Schumer. Even after Franken won the recount and he was duly sworn in, Schumer made every effort to exclude him from the political process.
I can only assume that Kirsten Gillibrand acted on behalf of Schumer when she ultimately led the effort to force him to resign when the controversial photos came out. They refused to support him.

yeah, it's a tough call though I would probably not vote rather than vote for someone like Liz Cheney

Interesting... never thought about that. Thankfully we didn't have to make a choice.

I will say it speaks to something about a former president's power and influence that they can be convicted

A Democrat, once a candidate, could mount a better defense but the party apparatus would see to it..

A Dem candidate going to trial during a campagin would be roundly rejected by the party apparatus.

Oh, Democrats would refuse to vote for a Democratic candidate for a whole lot less than being convicted of a felony.
