In reply to the discussion: I hope the debate was a reality check for those DUers who always underestimate Trump. [View all]NJCher

--Trump completely sidestepped the memory accusations that have been made at both candidates. He got around it by just making stuff up. As you say, he doesn't have to remember any fact or position. Then all you have to worry about is delivery. Speaking falsehoods has its down side, though, which I will get to in a minute.
--Biden was at a disadvantage remembering facts. This is not his forte anyway, so when he delivered the applicable truth (fact), it didn't come off as convincing or interesting. It wasn't effective.
Actually, as a communication teacher, we tell our students that facts and numbers should be handed out on paper at the conclusion of a speech.
The down side of what trump did is that his lies got more and more insane as the "debate" went on. Examples: Nancy Pelosi took responsibility for J6. His overreach could just as easily make tomorrow's big story "Trump tells ___(number) lies." No writer has to do any homework because PBS did live fact checking. All they have to do is count at the PBS site and it's an easy story.
