but as explained previously, we are not voting for the actual presidential candidate but for their electors-- so even if the candidate to whom they were pledged were to die, if they have the most votes, they will still be elected to the electoral college.

The other side can claim whatever they want in such a case, but it is unlikely to stand up in any court-- since it is the state's electors who are technically being elected in the general election, and not the candidates themselves. However, you are right that lawsuits would probably be brought in such an instance, but the cases would be very weak.

The President is actually elected by the electoral college in the December after the general election.

Ah, the party's electors are chosen by the party-- and there would be no change in the party's electors if a candidate died--- so both votes cast in the name of the dead candidate and a replacement candidate would be counted for that party's electors, and there would be no "lost votes".
