(78,868 posts)do not win elections, but they can plat an important part along with other factors. But if debates alone determined elections, we would have had President Jesse Jackson -- something I hoped and campaigned for
I will also say that the historic campaign a cruel teacher placed me in, to oppose the most popular kid in my 8th grade, actually was decided soley on the debate stage. The teacher was not happy that, in front of our class, he said to me that he had been a good amateur boxer, and would beat me. Because it was the end of the class, I had to deliver my response -- a poem that would make Ali proud -- in front of a class of laughing students.
Hence, the next week, while studying state hovernment, he had kids in his classes "run" for office. The entire campaign was an assembly with all junior high students in the audience, and candidates on stage, delivering their speech. Although this was decades before Jesse ran, my speech delivered a similar message. And I won. (I'd forgotten that until typing this response!)
I think they are important, vut will admit that I lacked the experience to be a state official. And I couldn't have delivered the state for any Democratic candidate. Still can't.
I am hoping that VP Harris will select one of the governors.
