All the Star Trek cast have said the movie gave them perspective into why people live the show and be one Trekkies (aka weird).

A love for the positive values of the show. Roddenberry and the other writers and directors wanted to tell everyone that we could move beyond racism, sexism, etc to a better world. And if we didn't move past it, we would end up like the world in "let that be your last battle field" doomed to kill itself over racial differences that were of no consequence.
