(1,681 posts)My husband's job took us to Israel for a year, (1995-1996). Netanyahu was problem even back then. I think he faced some sort of corruption scandal even back then. He wanted a hard line stance against the PLO and Rabin wanted to work for peace. I will admit that is a rather simplistic view, but that's how it was explained to me by some of my Israeli friends. The year I was there Rabin was assassinated. Heartbreaking.
The thing I remember the most was that the diverse groups of people there mostly got along. There were sucide bombings and occasionally a few shells lobbed in, but that was it. I am not Jewish, so I was an observer, and didn't have the right to an opinion either way. That was how it seemed to me, though.
IMHO the course Netanyahu is taking will only lead to more conflict. Of course Israel must defend their citizens, but escalation is suicide. They are surrounded on all sides by hostile countries just itching to jump in a fight. Diplomacy is the only way to go. The U.S. has helped broker peace in the past, but we can only help if Netanyahu helps the situation by only defending Israel--not provoking a full Middle East war. Finding a balance is the key.
The Israelis are very warm, generous, kind and loving people. Many of the people I met there are gone now. I wonder what they would think of the situation today. I have to believe they would want a lasting peace and that is what I want for the Israelis today. A lasting peace and safety for all their citizens.
