(14,921 posts)47. Sergeant Major --- my uncle rose through all ranks from private to Lt. Colonel. beginning as a 17 year old, joining
the army during the Korean War.
He he'd every rank EXCEPT Sergeant Major. He wanted that rank.
but other opportunities came to him to have his college degree so he abandoned his quest for Sgt/Mgr to earn a degree and a commission.

During my time in the US Army, I encountered many full bird colonels and a numerous generals. Only one CSM.
