My guess is the latter. He needs adoring crowds and it's not happening for him anymore. That's why they're booking him in places like Montana. Next stop will probably be somewhere in Alabama or Kentucky or some other safely red place. Just to fill the venue and make him feel good. Otherwise he'll go on nightly unhinged rants.
