(11,816 posts)My dad always assumed that he was a burden, and he was anything but because I decided going into it that if I looked at it as a burden, it would be, and if I looked at it as a privilege, just as you did, it would be way, way easier to get up every morning. And it was.
One day my dad asked me how I put up with him, and I said "Do you remember when I was little and had bronchitis all the time? And you would come in and rock me to sleep in the rocker, in this room, even though you had to go to work the next day? Well, you still have a few years of credit on the books for that." He laughed, but I meant it.
I'm pleased to say I took care of him with a happy heart, even though he was a stubborn old coot and we fought like cats and dogs when we were younger.
"And aren't you lucky to have someone to share the experience of parent caring" Yikes. I honestly felt really sad for her when I got this reply.
Keep up the good work of caretaking. And don't worry about my anonymity - my last name is like an Irish "Smith" or "Jones"!
