(15,377 posts)They have all of their 1st amendment rights to publish as they see fit, so in that sense they are 'free', but they do not provide a diversity of viewpoints. Instead they provide a very strictly controlled narrow band of viewpoints that generally fall between 'neoliberal center right' and 'fascist'.
What we have in that narrow band is the absurd Red Vs Blue partisan shit-show that you think is some how avoided by the allegedly free press.
Social media actually provides a far more diverse platform, as the cost of entry is much lower than publishing a national newspaper or operating a cable news channel.

Politicians can reach 3 billion people on facebook, somewhere around 560 million visit the NYT website, and 1.2 million on MSNBC.
