(18,954 posts)You see... for a bullet to "unload" it's kinetic energy...
It needs to 1) Hit something or 2) fight gravity
A bullet bleeds off VERY LITTLE kinetic energy by hitting a piece of paper. 22LR or 50BMG, just a clean hole through the paper.
The mass of the object being struck affects the degree of kinetic energy unloaded.
When a bullet hits a steel plate, all that kinetic energy impacting with an immovable object causes the bullet to fragment into tiny pieces. When a bullet hits a water filled object, like a watermelon or a human...
not only does the bullet unload it's kinetic energy but there's a secondary release of energy from the hydrostatic wave inside the object
Graze wounds unload VERY LITTLE kinetic energy and is 100% consistent with Trump's minor injury. Doesn't matter if it's 22LR or 9mm or .223
Having said that... I suspect a very large projectile with a great deal of mass... maybe an 8" artillery shell passing so close you cause a violent air pressure disruption that could at a minimum blow out an ear drum and maybe fracture a skull or turn the contents into jelly?
