(318 posts)I lived in Texas during this campaign. She was actually losing to the Republican candidate, Clayton Williams, who was a shoe-in to win. I remember the excitement about this man who told it like it is. Williams was the stereotypical good ole boy, an oilman complete with ten gallon hat. Texans lapped it up. (I thought he was ridiculous since, as an outsider Midwest transplant, I never embraced the whole cowboy wannabe look and dont mess with Texas attitude so prevalent in the state.)
It was his race to lose
.and sure he gaffed his way throughout, including a rape joke. (This was before Me Too when misogyny was still a somewhat accepted practice). Richards was able to capitalize on his numerous mistakes, since this was before Trump when the GOP still had some values and standards in candidates and what was a deal breaker. A rape joke could lose you an election, unfortunately not anymore.
Richards lost her reelection to Shrub (what the great Molly Ivins called George W. Bush). She was an anomaly and the only D governor since Reconstruction and after her one term. Basically, she just lucked out with a very flawed candidate. But she had a national profile because of that race and her wonderful leadership
.that the people there didnt appreciate while they had it.
Luckily, I got out before she lost to Shrub.
