Done properly, there's still a vital role for local news to hold local/regional politicians accountable, to ensure the public is aware of decisions and controversies involving school boards, councils and sheriff's offices, etc.

You may get that information from online media outlets rather than in physical newspaper form, but the work of local journalists can still be of great value.
