Why is it preferable to immediately go to the
"kill the messenger" approach to this discussion as opposed to reading the entire thread and studying the math?

Because that's the subject of the post, math.

There is certainly no reason for not starting an OP to discuss the "reason to be suspicious about any possible form of cheating given the circumstance" but that's not what the topic is here.
