That's a damned misleading question. Such a shooter as today's is obviously making irrational, perverted, unjustifiable choices. That's never going to be the test of sanity, or no one would ever get convicted of crimes. The question is, did the shooter have the capacity to know that this was wrong. If he snuck in, if he planned it in advance and used some kind of surreptition to get to his targets, if he planned out how to get to his mom's room and evade capter until he did so, if he took the time to hide his preparations in advance of his horrible crime... then yes, he certainly does have a mind capable of figuring out this was wrong. Legally, yes, this "sick" person was probably sane.
