Your comments about the South are also correct, but the problems unfortunately go back literally centuries at this point and are basically unsolvable. The post-Civil War era absolutely required a radical "year zero" root-and-branch restructuring of that whole culture, and it never occurred. It wouldn't be that surprising if the country ended up splitting off or at least de-federalizing some of the Deep South. The problem is that even the reddest states have urban areas that will not be happy about that (to say the least).
