Extended hard freeze is really important for insect, fungus and animal control. Our winters in Minnesota have not been cold enough for several years now, and the damage to our cold ecosystem is beginning to show.

From a personal standpoint, warm winters are more comfortable and heat is cheaper, but in the larger picture, a normal, cold winter is good news.
