(23,736 posts)I used to watch cable news regularly. I'd have it on all day in the background while working. Since the election, I haven't watched cable news at all. Instead I've just been getting news from DU. Today I watched the Hegseth hearings, and it occurred to me that I don't miss cable news at all, because it's not really news, it's just 24 hours of mostly useless opinions.
When I was watching the Hegseth hearing today, I was watching live news as it happened. I didn't need a cable news host and eight talking heads in boxes explaining to me what I was seeing, or what the ramifications were, or how this was going to be great for Democrats, or bad for Democrats, or whatever.
It occurred to me that this is how I used to consume the news back in the day. I'd read the paper in the morning, read DU during the day to find out what was going on at that moment, and then maybe consume an hour of opinion in the evening, perhaps followed by the Daily Show. I think that's partly because cable news actually used to be more diverse in terms of the political leanings of their hosts, so I could tune out when there was stuff on that I didn't want to watch. (It's crazy to think that MSNBC's evening lineup used to be Tucker Carlson followed by Chris Matthews followed by Keith Olbermann). Ultimately, back then I wasn't mainlining hours and hours of "political strategists" just endlessly talking and ultimately delivering very little.
So I think my new regime is to consume more direct news, and less cable news talking head opinion. I think it's working for me so far...
