In reply to the discussion: At what point do we general strike or ALL get into the streets? [View all]LeftInTX
(34,130 posts)29. Apparently a general strike is going to be held in May 2028

It really takes that long to plan a strike?
They should do it well before midterms. Somehow, I doubt this will materialize. Not that many people are in unions anymore.
Also, what would they be striking for? The last general strike was held in 1946.
Many of the protests from 1945 to 1946 were for better pay and working hours, but only one study done by Jerome F. Scott and George C. Homans of 118 strikes in Detroit from 1944 to 1945, found that only four were for wages, with the rest being for discipline and company policies or firings
Right now, there are plenty of jobs. Would workers be striking for better pay? What do they want?
We aren't gonna get anywhere, if we are just going to complain about Trump. It could be about elimination of EEO? Increase the minimum wage?
Right now, it seems like Trump is conducting a reign of terror, shock and awe etc. I don't know if a general strike would oust creepy people from the cabinet, retain birthright citizenship, closing the border, immigrant raids, shutting off asylum, eliminating transgender rights etc etc etc.... Much of this has nothing to do with work conditions.

I suspect the higher loss of money/security might change things. But, I can't see the future.

Yeah, right now the ones feeling the pain are immigrants. They are not voters.
