35. Landon died in 1991, when Newt Gingrich was still a bombastic back-bencher...

...and Rush Limbaugh was still all hot air and not a "Majority-maker" for the Republicans. In other words, Landon was one of the "old rules" Republicans who could be engaged and spoken to, not the not-too-much-later version that Newt turned into zombie intransigent always-enemies.
