My dad survived polio. It cost him the use of one of his legs. He used to buy two pairs of shoes, 1 size 10, and 1 size 7.5. He would keep the left and the right of one pair, and donate the other. He said; "there is another polio survivor out there somewhere whose other leg was affected, they could use that other pair".
He told me something profound once that I still remember to this day, despite the fact that he was about the most sarcastic man I've ever known.
He said; "some people with a disability become bitter and cruel and heartless, because they are obsessed with the unfairness of it all. They yearn for people to suffer, and take great joy in the suffering of others. Others dedicate themselves to caring for people, because they would never wish for the suffering of others."
I have NO doubt which category Mitch falls into.
