If the goal is really to control folks other than Mexicans, which is as much in Mexico's interest as Trump's, then stopping the walk-ins from Central and South America is a major part of the equation. Last thing Mexico needs is a bunch of folks coming north and then being trapped in their country with no good way to get to the US and no easy way to get home. Trump and his ilk do not note that 40% of the folks that become illegal immigrants were in fact legal visitors when they crossed the border--be they tourists, student, temporary worker or whatever, and then just overstayed their visas. He makes a big show of his round-ups but assuming the 40% figure stays the same, his deportations are doing little to decrease the net 11 million supposed illegal immigrants in the US.
