48. Not just "voting systems"

or "election systems", but something much more specific. Trump referred explicitly to "vote COUNTING computers" We know Trump would never come up with such a specific phrase on his own. He clearly had Musk whispering in his ear.

Not coincidentally, it is the tabulation or vote counting process that has a serious vulnerability in the ESS solution. In short, tabulation is performed at each voting site on an optical scanning machine. It saves the ballots in a lock box, and in normal situations, those ballots are never touched again. And that is possible because the normal procedure is for an election worker to remove a memory card from the tabulator after the polls close and the workers have done a hand count to make sure the number of ballots tabulated equals the number of ballots issued and not voided.

That memory card is supposed to contain a true representation of the votes that were cast at that site. However, there is a chain-of-custody issue. at any point from when the memory card leaves the voting location and is officially accepted and read at the county HQ, it is possible for a bad actor to read the memory card and change the tabulation. And a person with skills can do this in a way that will not be detected at the county HQ.

Of course, this manipulation is easily exposed by re-scanning ballots and checking whether the new totals match the memory card. But there were no recounts at all, so that protection did not exist in this election.

So when Trump says Musk knows all about the "vote counting computers" that is one scenario that could be done. Most of the swing states have Democratic Governors, yet AFAIK, none of them has ordered any kind of post-election audit to determine what Trump meant with his ominous "vote counting machines" comment.

I should mention that ESS was founded by a Republican partisan and is in widespread yous in nearly every state -- including all of the swing states.
