(2,125 posts)Lean has been promising that fully self-driving cars -- coast to coast with no human involvement -- would be happening by 2017. Of course he was lying. The technology never had a prayer of doing that, and probably won't until around 2035. He lies, but he also believes it "might" happen, so he rationalizes lying about everything.
However, that is beside the point. As I said above, it doesn't have to work in order to get a contract. The government contracts for all kinds of things that are experimental and don't arrive on schedule or at all. And the contracts usually have minimal penalties. The "penalty", such as it is, is that you don't get a contract for the next phase if the first phase doesn't pan out. But since Musk is putting himself in the position to dictate the terms of the contracts he will award to himself, he can put a lot of money in his pocket, working or not.
