(2,508 posts)Most of us are able to function and feel "whole" enough even without many years of therapy. I am a big proponent of therapy (for everyone, imo the world would be a better place if EVERYONE was in therapy
) but I don't want to perpetuate a stereotype of a dysfunctional, "broken", victim that's unable to work, socialize, and function in society. If that was the case then a HUGE % of women would be unable to function.
I totally get this is targeted to Nancy Mace, a repugnant woman who says and does horrible things... just speaking up as a SA survivor who was functional again REALLY quickly afterward, at the time without the therapy because I had to be. When I finally did get therapy many years later, it was to address another issue and old traumas were visited as part of the process but by that point I was so far beyond THAT trauma, I didn't feel a need to hyper focus on it and my therapist agreed.
All that said, I'm really sorry about your sister, thats absolutely tragic
PTSD is absolutely tied to substance abuse and suicide and not everyone's trauma is processed the same way.
