(18,560 posts)The current administration is more along the lines of what M. Montesquieu would have called an "Oriental Despotism," the Spirit of which, he tells us, is Fear. Ironically, the Spirit of Monarchy is honor, of which the MAGA movement has none at all.
It seems that, just as the Right doesn't know the meaning of Fascism or Communism, so the public also doesn't know the meaning of monarchy, or feudal, or serf, or any of the scare-words the pundits like to throw around to try to describe the current political atmosphere. Eh, it's a pet peeve of mine.
As for the American Revolution, the propagandists then painted a very false picture of the British monarchy, and that picture has persisted to this day. George III was a Constitutional Monarch, not some divine-right absolutist as some 17th-century monarchs were (including some of his own predecessors). Imagine, the propagandists in the 18th century were just as unreliable, mendacious, and disingenuous as they are now. Let us devoutly hope that future historians, if there are any, will not take the pundits of our time at face value as regards really explaining what is going on, as so many of our time appear to have done with their 18th-Century predecessors.
