...not being coy, but just prevaricating, being deliberately dishonest.

This response was particularly misleading because, his answer was brusque and dismissive.

He can't have it both ways, Either he forgot his own demagoguery, or he's trying to disown it.

He wouldn't be the first inveterate liar who can't keep track of his own demagoguery.
