(26,204 posts)I believe that the POS in Chief had multiple goals for this meeting.
First, there's no way that he would ever provide Ukraine with security guarantees against Russia. That was never going to happen. The POS might have believed that he could bully Zelenskyy into signing a business deal for rare earth metals because of Ukraine's need for aid. But, as the BBC asked regarding this meeting, what was Ukraine going to get in return? Nothing but US business operations inside Ukraine's borders. IMO, that would be very risky for Ukraine. It would give the POS in Chief an excuse to place US security people inside Ukraine whose loyalties would be the same as the POSIC -- with Russia.
Second, in the event that Zelenskyy did sign the agreement, POSIC might actually have believed that he'd get a Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Third, as the BBC pointed out this whole meeting with cameras rolling was like a reality TV show. IMO, it was deliberately staged to gain political support in the US for turning against Ukraine if Zelenskyy did not agree to the POSIC's extortion terms. Without agreement, they could then gang up on Zelenskyy with the usual MAGAt gish gallop to try to publicly humiliate Zelenskyy to the world.
But, IMO, they failed to humiliate Zelenskyy. He stood strong as the only man of courage in the room. He deserves honors for standing his ground in asking what Ukraine would get in a peace deal.
The POSIC uses extortion to "negotiate." He's nothing but a crime family thug who uses the props of the presidency to carry out his criminal behavior. We've been down this road with him before regarding Ukraine. This kind of quid pro quo extortion is what got him impeached the first time.
Zelenskyy loses nothing by standing firm on everything he said regarding the need for security against Russia and the unreliability of Russian negotiations. If he agrees with the POSIC'S attempt to extort Ukraine's rare earth metals, Ukraine will be owned by both the US POSIC and by Putin. Putin will be allowed to hold onto the land it has stolen and the children it has kidnapped. The POSIC will benefit from the rare earth metals profits which Ukraine would need for itself, for rebuilding.
In other words, for Ukraine -- and for the rest of Europe -- negotiating with the US today is just as unreliable as negotiating with Russia. They'd better recognize this pretty damn quickly and start working with each other.
