(60,220 posts)I have been speaking French for over 50 years. It's almost second nature to me now, among a few other languages. If a country borders on Germany, where I live, I pretty much have to speak the language (Czech is the major exception).
My friends in Paris like to recount an incident from the Cannes film festival a few decades ago. There was an entry from Québec one year, and the festival organizers ordered subtitles in French for the festival viewers. The filmmakers from Québec protested vehemently that no French subtitles were needed, since the film was in "French." The festival organizers told them they could call it whatever they wanted, but they couldn't understand a word of the dialogue, and if they wanted their film entered, there would be French subtitles. I don't remember what the outcome was, but I imagine the Canadians allowed the subtitles under protest, as that was not as bad as having their film tossed out altogether.
