54. I understand not trusting a country that put such a malignant narcistic jerk in the presidency not once, but twice.

But the lack of an organized opposition is the culmination of a perfect storm.

Trump, on his own, is too incompetent to carry out a fraction of what he was spouting off about.
Project 2025 was out there - but Trump, on his own, is too incompetent to carry it out
Trump is generally too egotistical to let anyone else run the show

Those three things suggested that even if others wanted to implement Project 2025, it was likely to happen at a slow pace with lots of internal squabbling and pushback from Trump who doesn't like to be told what to do.

Enter Musk - who enjoys being a bull in a China shop - and who, for some reason, Trump is enthralled with enough to let Musk run the show.

Musk, combined with the authors of Project 2025 is a much more dangerous prospect than Trump, alone.

They came in, on day 1, with executive orders drafted, and relatively secret plans about how they were going to get around the safeguards.

We have some organizations that have specific interests that were keyed up to fight specific pieces of Project 2025 - and they are working - witness all of the litigation that started almost immediately.

The problem is that the mechanisms by which much of the chaos has been implemented are completely unexpected - with no organization specifically geared up to fight it - and with a Republican congress unwilling to stand up to Trump, no clear legal mechanism for others to wrest control of the purse strings back (since it belongs to Congress).

And - most of us are just overwhelmed into inaction, or ineffective action because it is like trying to drink from not just a fire hydrant, but from Niagara Falls.

The things that has shocked me is how quickly everyone folded because they are terrified of falling into the spotlight as the target of Trump's ire. He is so blatantly punishing anyone who speaks up - threatening impeachment of judges, withholding funding to Main, etc. But even before that, my University took down the Pride flags immediately - not even a peep - even without anything beyond the day 1 executive order. News media has softened any criticism of him - even last night's fact checking by organizations that used to be brutal soft pedaled their fact-checking. And on and on.

I get how it looks from outside - and how impossible it probably is for you to truly understand what it is like to be inside this hurricane.
