"Center" = middle, between Left and right.

"Centrist Democrat" = a Democrat who's position is in the middle of the Left and the right.

Moving the Democratic Party toward the right has been a decades-long effort by such groups as Third Way etc. Obviously, this rightward pull is celebrated by (if not actually helped along or maybe even instigated by) the rightwing.
