... that supposedly comes from the former Soviet Union. I may have read it here, and if so, hats off to whoever posted it.

A man stops at the same newsstand every day, buys a paper, looks at the front page, and then drops it in the trash. Finally, the newsstand clerk can't suppress his curiosity any longer, and asks the man why he does this.
"I'm checking to see if someone died," the man says.
The clerk says, "But if that's what you want to know, why aren't you looking at the obituaries? Why only the front page?"
"When this person dies," says the man, "it will be on the front page."
