19. I've seen much misunderstanding by people thinking we didn't pay into SS

when those of us who were penalized on our own SS paid SS taxes for at least 10 years but after the offset we were lucky to recoup our SS contributions during our entire lifespan when most SS retirees recoup all they ever paid in within less than 10 years of drawing SS. Especially if our SS-covered work was in more recent years when SS tax were higher. Plus those of us under Federal Civil Service paid Medicare taxes plus huge percentage into Civil Service so our other govt pension isn't a freebie either.

The GPO was especially unfair since SS pays substantial benefits to spouses who either never worked or worked very little while penalizing those of us (and our spouses) who worked for decades paying in a lot more.
