like Garland and Mueller, that still believe in upholding norms and proceeding cautiously - that bipartisanship is something that the other side would somehow value.

But we're just not living in those times. Trump/Musk view anyone who plays by the regular rules as stupid/weak etc - that's their superpower - getting everyone else to go along with the old ways while they do the opposite.

Shutting downt the gov't would've caused some pain in the markets and gov't services - but would've made a stand and would've caused Trump's poll numbers to fall. Trump brands himself the deal maker and if no deal was getting done the public would've blamed him and his party.

By going along, it just helps to normalize Trump/Musk, who will now proceed with his agenda unfettered, as the Reconciliation bill only requires a simple majority in the Senate. This (legislative filibuster) was one of the few areas of power we had.
