15. In my particular skill area

before the pandemic lockdown, if you walked into my office area, everyone in my group - except me - was from India or thereabouts. Probably H-1B. I don't ask but in a few cases I know because it's come up in conversation. These individuals are good people, mind you. BUT. If you walk into an office full of IT people and it's all white males, what would you think? If you go to the sales department and it's all young, attractive, white women, what do you think? And then you go to the restroom and the janitor comes in, and that person is Black. Would it make you go hmmm? (It is not the PEOPLE I have a problem with, it is the POLICY.)

(I don't work at Tesla, but I do work for a technology company)

It is not "a small number" of engineering jobs. Whole specialties in information technology have been taken over by H-1B workers. There are reasons companies prefer to hire H-1Bs and it isn't because there aren't enough bright Americans for these jobs. I know, I have seen the games they play to avoid hiring Americans, especially at the lower experience levels. Well if you can't get a job at the bottom of the ladder, you will never be able to climb up it.

And don't bother looking for Black folks in my specialty. (to be clear I have zero input to hiring; if I did I would sure try to improve the situation.)

Democrats need to WAKE THE EFF UP when it comes to the H-1B system and how it screws over American workers.

n.b: I saw an article that visa workers are being warned to avoid leaving the US to visit home this year, because TSF's admin is f*cking with them when they try to come back. THAT is not right, and NOT the way to fix the problem with the policy. These are good people and don't deserve to be treated like shit any more than anyone else. There are reasonable ways to reduce the use of H-1B, like raising the bar on the criteria to come in on this visa. Being cruel to people who have the visa, is just cruelty. But if it weren't cruel it wouldn't be a Trump policy, I guess.
