Could it be that HBO/MAX is extorting Bill Maher to visit the White House for their own self-interest? Or because of threats to his loved ones? We don’t know because we don’t have the whole story and may not for years. Regardless, it’s certainly not a “Portrait in Courage”.

I always liked that Maher used to illustrate that no one is always right and no one is always wrong. We don’t like to think that our political heroes are occasionally wrong, and worse, we don’t like to admit that people that we politically abhor are occasionally right — but it does happen. I used to admire that Maher’s shows would remind us of this.

This latest news feels like a bridge too far — like he jumped the shark into the world of ridicule. That’s how I feel now. But I feel that knowing that I may not know the whole story.
